Haven't had a chance to do much with this blog until now. We left Venice yesterday and rented a car at the airport, then drove east through the Italian countryside to Trieste. Incredibly confusing getting the right road to go through Trieste and into Slovenia without a decent map or GPS, but with the help of a couple of broken Italian-English conversations with wary, dubious locals, and in spite of highly indescriptive road signs, we flew headlong into the land of the south Slavs. Quite exciting as the landscape was changing dramatically with glimpses of an impossibly blue Adriatic on our right. But as we then headed into Croatia the sun was setting fast making the hills we drove through look wild and mysterious. Negotiated one passport control point, then encountered another a couple of kms down the road. Handed our passports to the officer and he asked, "Hrvat?" "No, Americanac." He laughed, gave us back the passports without looking at them and said, "America, ha, ha, George Bush, Obama," and sent us on our way.
Exited the highway to Rovinj and found our hotel with the help of some old guy speaking terrible English. We couldn't follow his directions, so he kindly hopped (?) on his tiny little scooter and led us there. Tipped him 20 kuna and he got in a plug for his buddy who gives boat rides of the harbor and islands around Rovinj.
The morning is fresh and clear, but breezy and cool. A strong contrast to our last Venetian morning.
I'll try to write later about our Venetian adventures. In the meantime, here's some pics.
Well, the wireless seems to be bogged down, so I'll send 'em later.
